Ketones

Why drink ketones? Do I need them?

Ketones are an energy source produced by your liver from the breakdown of fat.

The most common argument against drinking PTK's (pure therapeutic ketones) is that if you are fat adapted, you are making ketones so why should you pay for them?

In addition to the answers below, the best way to address this argument is to go to any keto group online and see how many people are struggling to stay in nutritional ketosis.  This process is difficult and our bodies can be fickle about producing ketones.  Especially if you are amongst the millions of Americans with Metabolic Syndrome, Insulin Resistance, Pre-Diabetes or Type 2 Diabetes.  These 4 diagnosis are basically all the same illness, just to different degrees.  For those of us on this scale, our bodies over-react to any carbohydrate, producing several times more insulin to handle the carbs than a normal person.  Insulin production turns off ketone production.  So if you are an over-reactor, you can constantly be getting kicked out of nutritional ketosis.  Especially until you heal your metabolism.

The most recent numbers say that 64% of American adults are diagnosed Pre-Diabetes or Diabetes.  The scary part is that Metabolic Syndrome and Insulin Resistance are often not tested for or diagnosed and can precede a Pre-Diabetes diagnosis by decades.  The best estimates show that only 12% of American adults are metabolically healthy, leaving 88% of us somewhere on the path to Diabetes.

Aside from the multiple other health benefits to supplementation of PTK's, it looks like 88% of us can truly benefit from drinking them just on the estimates.  Where do you think you fall?  In the 88% or the 12%?

Drinking PTK's jumpstarts your body into ketosis and helps train your cells to use ketones.  Studies show that the more ketones are available to your cells, the ketones your cells will use.

5 Benefits of exogenous ketones - Dr. Ryan Lowery

Cognitive

Ketones are the preferred fuel source for the brain. They can give us energy and are readily taken up to brain and utilized, even with the presence of glucose.

Controlling Appetite

Are ketones a magic pill that instantly melt off fat? No, but they indirectly increase brown adipose tissue and help you burn more calories. Hormones can cause people to eat more, but ketones can help control your appetite.

Longevity

There’s been a lot of promise in studies with animals eating a regular ‘western’ diet and supplementing with exogenous ketones. They are living longer consuming exogenous ketones, even with a standard diet. Ketones aren’t only energy, they are a signaling metabolite as well. More research will be done on this in the future.

Performance

Many athletes and other individuals using exogenous ketones fatigue later than those who aren’t using exogenous ketones. Athletes can potentially delay fatigue in their respective sports utilizing exogenous ketones, allowing them to optimize performance.

Therapeutic

Studies are being done to help determine future benefits of exogenous ketones. Thought leaders within the Prüvit team are actively going out and extending the ketone conversation EVEN FURTHER into their respective fields and communities. YOU are helping drive that research forward. Without you, this would’ve taken 30-50 years to accomplish, but with you we’ve done it in two years. Please continue to get this message out to the masses.

Ease your way into ketosis

As your body converts it's energy source from glucose to ketones, there is an adjustment period.  People refer to this as 'Keto Flu' because you can feel run dwon, lethargic, foggy, achy and overall unwell.  The keto flu is unpleasant and a sign that your body isn't efficiently in ketosis.  Adding Prüvit's Pure Therapeutic Ketones (PTK) can help mitigate the symptoms of keto flu by giving you energy, helping to train your body to use ketones for fuel, improving your focus, mood, sleep and energy.  PTK's can also kick start the body into ketosis so that producing and using your own ketones can happen faster and easier.

Fasting, hunger and training harder

There is a lot of good science behind how keto helps to rebalance blood sugar, ghrelin (hunger hormone), and leptin (satiety hormone), all of which can cause out of control hunger and cravings.

Ketones help lower appetite all by themselves.  Using PTK's can also help with fasted workouts.  They provide additional energy and reduce hunger, they can help you work out harder for longer.

Cognitive Benefits

The brain uses up the vast majority of the energy out bodies produce.  Ketones are a more effecient fuel for your brain.  Research as early as the 1940's shows that ketone bodies are used in proportion to their presence in the blood.  The more ketones in your body, the more ketones your body uses, EVEN IN THE PRESENCE OF GLUCOSE.

Encouraging weight loss

As discussed above, PTK's can help to manage hunger, which is often hard to control for those who have excess weight to lose.  There can be real physiological reasons for increased hunger, and it can be tied to mental patterns and behaviors.  Being able to break those patterns is key to losing weight.  PTK's are also proven to encourage loss of white fat while keeping brown fat until white fat is gone - a 'good' type of fat that generates heat and burns calories.
